The Gardens at HCP is hiring for three summer positions. Please see below for position and application descriptions:

Position 1: Gardens Assistant  (POSITION FILLED)

The Gardens at HCP (https://hcp.ca/) is a public garden and place of learning in Saanich. The HCP is a not-for-profit society focused on the provision of horticulture education and the development and maintenance of 103 acres of educational gardens and conservation lands.  We are currently looking for someone to help fill the employment position of Gardens Assistant. This will be a 35 hour per week temporary position for 8 weeks from Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM – 3:30 PM. The successful candidate will work with the Head Gardener as well as other staff and volunteers in the garden. Start Date: June 28, 2021.
The Gardens Assistant duties will include:

  • Gardening assistance in any of our beautiful 9 acres of gardens. The Gardens Assistant will work with staff and volunteers to help develop these gardens over the 8 week work term.
  • Assisting wherever needed with the seasonal garden cleanup.
  • Act as Volunteer Liaison during volunteer days, relaying information from gardens staff to volunteer groups, assist volunteers where required.

Requirements
This position is a Canada Summer Job funded through Service Canada. Applicants must:

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and,
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

The successful candidate must be available to work weekends and be able to lift and carry 20 lbs as well as work in a physical environment outside all day. Biology, plant, or gardening knowledge is an asset.

Position 2: Events Assistant (POSITION FILLED)

The Gardens at HCP (https://hcp.ca/) is a public garden and place of learning in Saanich. The HCP is a not-for-profit society focused on the provision of horticulture education and the development and maintenance of 103 acres of educational gardens and conservation lands. We are currently looking for someone fill the employment position of Events Assistant.  The Events Assistant will help in the office at the reception desk; assist with private facility rentals and with our social media.
This position is full-time (35 hours/week) and temporary for 8 weeks, start date June 28, 2021. 
The successful candidate will display the following qualities:

  • Proven interest and experience in the hospitality and/or wedding and events industry
  • Friendly manner with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively through verbal, written and online communications
  • Ability to stand, kneel, bend, twist and lift heavy objects

Reporting to the Event Manager, the successful candidate will learn through a mix of one-on-one training, hands-on experience and self-directed learning. Over time, the candidate will be responsible for the following tasks: 

  • Perform site visits with potential event clients
  • Set up tables, chairs, tablecloths and A/V equipment according to event layouts and timelines
  • Be onsite during events to address client needs and day-of requests
  • Assist with various administrative tasks including but not limited to contract preparation, processing payments, updating and maintaining current event files and preparing marketing materials
  • Oversee the front desk and gift shop area, including answering the phone, processing transactions, and registering new members and workshop registrations using specialized computer software
  • Assist with Community Education workshops by providing instructor liaison during workshops, workshop assistance with room and audio-visual requirements and promotions
  • Updating promotional materials such as posters and brochures and adding events to the website calendar

Hours will vary according to the event bookings and may include daytime, weekends and evenings until 11:30pm. The successful candidate will work Wednesday – Sundays and must be available for weekend work and be able to lift and carry 20 lbs. 35 hours per week / $16.00 per hour. Position 3: Summer Camp Coordinator

The Gardens at HCP is a public garden for learning in Saanich, BC. The Horticulture Centre of the Pacific (HCP) is a not-for-profit society focused on the provision of horticulture education and the development and maintenance of 103 acres of educational gardens and conservation lands. We are currently looking for a post-secondary student to fill our Summer Camp Coordinator position. The successful candidate will work with the Children and Youth Programs Coordinator to assist with the planning of all summer camps and lead in their facilitation as a member of the School and Youth Programs team.
General Duties to include:

  • Collaborate in the development of a creative, hands-on and interactive outdoor garden camp program
  • Manage and support a small team of program delivery staff and volunteers  
  • Support and facilitate the delivery of the outdoor garden camp programs
  • Develop a program delivery plan and package for 2021 and future camps
  • Create additional materials for ongoing program use and reference materials

The successful candidate must:

  • Values and practices collaboration for a fun and interactive learning experience
  • Have positive experiences working with children and youth
  • Be knowledgeable in natural environmental systems, including food production
  • Have excellent communication and technological skills 
  • Provide their own laptop and have dependable transportation
  • Complete a Criminal Record Check
  • Have a current Emergency First Aid Certificate

Wage: $17 per hour
Total Hours: 8 weeks x 30 hours + (40 hours)= 280 hours
Days: Monday – Friday as required for program delivery and planning
