This key position is responsible for the growth of Community Education Programming at HCP. He/she/they will work in sync with HCP staff to ensure all programs are aligned to HCP’s horticulture education goals and fit into the ongoing schedules of the gardens and college.

Job responsibilities include:

  • Identification of the community’s and the HCP members’ needs for horticulture related community education programs courses and programs, including the identification of relevant trends in horticulture and course delivery;
  • Create/modify courses and programs and activities to meet the ever-changing needs of individual learners, HCP, and the community;
  • Review course/program/instructor evaluations with the instructor and utilize the data to plan, modify or cancel programs;
  • Responsible for the recruitment, hiring, orientation and performance management of instructors;
  • Develop program area budget to meet targets/operating margins as established with the their direct report
  • Establish individual course budgets where required;
  • Work with their direct report to resolve budget issues and discrepancies;
  • Utilize financial information to plan, modify or cancel courses or programs;
  • Communicate marketing needs with the marketing team to ensure successful promotion and registrants
  • Prepare course descriptions and write-ups and post to website and online booking system;
  • Represent Community Education on internal and external committees/organizations;
  • Promote Community Education activities through building external relationships, utilizing community resources and working with the HCP staff and volunteer team;
  • Resolve customer complaints and concerns with professionalism and understanding

Knowledge, Skills and Expertise Knowledge:

  • Effective marketing and sales approaches for educational institutions
  • Effective approaches to adult education through community education courses
  • Excellent knowledge of horticulture and gardening
  • Course design
  • Use of internet and social media for marketing and communications skills
  • Computer, internet, social media proficient
  • WordPress website knowledge
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal communications and team-oriented skills
  • Self-motivated with ability to work without supervision
  • Creative problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent organization and ability to balance priorities

Experience

  • Demonstrated experience in relationship building and conflict resolution
  • Experience in the design and/or teaching of community education courses
  • Communications and media relations
  • Solid experience with the management of volunteers and sound understanding of the volunteer experience
  • Demonstrated abilities to determine priorities, be self-directed and work with minimal supervision

Education

  • Post secondary education in business management an asset
  • Any certification in project management and volunteer management

Additional Responsibilities

  •  Assisting at the front desk as necessary

Hours of Work: 30-37 hours per week
