Jennifer Davies was the Assistant Producer of the BBC series The Victorian Kitchen Garden (1987). In collaboration with Harry Dodson, famed horticulturist, this 14 chapter book describes the techniques, planning, equipment and harvest of a Victorian kitchen garden. Beautifully illustrated with period drawings, engravings and full color photographs show the kitchen garden restoration at Chilton Foliat Walled Garden in 1986. The author writes in a friendly manner enticing the reader to turn the pages to discover what plant varieties and heirloom seeds were planted. Historical notes, seed catalogues and companies are often noted. The author also speaks to the role of women in the Victorian garden for weeding, hoeing or picking off caterpillars. Gardens
were a man's world!

Sadly with the passing of Harry Dodson in 2005, this garden fell into disrepair and has now been bulldozed for housing and parking. We are fortunate to have this published record of Chilton Foliat Walled Garden restoration.
