This garden is a production garden where plants are planted closer together to maximize space for pruning of plants. The plants from this garden are used to create holiday wreaths for our always popular wreath-making workshops in late November-December.
The Memorial Wreath Garden showcases shapes, colours, and textures found in Conifers. Conifers are considered the “Kings” of all foliage plants. They thrive in all seasons and exhibit different forms, colours, and textures through the year. The Conifers found here vary in form, such as weeping and prostrate, and colours ranging from golds, blues, and greens of many shades and variegations.
This location had both drainage and weed challenges. The garden’s location makes it challenging to regulate drainage and heat. Common Horsetail (Equisetum arvense) rhizomes had spread throughout the entire site. Horsetail is one of the most widespread garden weeds in the world. To address these challenges in an environmentally centered methodology, implemented a few changes to the garden. Raised planter beds made from locally milled Western Red Cedar provide a sunny, well-drained area to assist in drain issues, and to combat the horsetail, we’ve used Solarization as an eradication method rather than traditional harmful pesticides.
