Making leather with local and invasive plants

March 27 @ 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm

Adult Community Education | Craft| 3-hour workshop

In this 3-hour workshop, learn the history of natural leather-making and make your own small rabbitskin leather.

Leather was historically made through the organic chemistry of combining plants with animal hide. Utilizing local, non-local, and invasive species, we can make leather naturally at home and in the kitchen.

You will first learn how to start the process of leather making on a fresh rabbit skin, then you will receive a nearly-finished product to add the finishing touches to in an afternoon. You'll leave with your own furry rabbitskin leather, to use as a centrepiece or add to leather crafts.

This workshop employs rabbit skins from local family-run Vancouver Island rabbit meat farms. The skins are otherwise discarded when animals are harvested for meat.  All materials including waterproof aprons are provided. it is recommended to wear dark-coloured clothing, as plant tannins can dye clothing. This workshop will not involve any meat.
