Willow Bark Wall Pouch

10:00am – 3:30pm

Willow bark is a lovely material for basket weaving and this project is a perfect way to show it off. We will be weaving this variation of a point pouch designed to hang on the wall to hold utensils or a flower arrangement. Along with the plaited designs using willow bark we will also use locally foraged materials for twining patterns. Discussion and demonstrations will cover how to harvest and prepare these locally foraged materials.

A materials kit will be provided which includes the prepared willow bark, daylily leaves for twining and waxed thread for twining and lashing. Please note that these workshops are popular and classes are kept small to ensure individual attention. Note that refunds for cancellations are not possible once your kit has been mailed.

Coiled Baskets with Soft Materials

10:00am – 3:00pm

Coiling is one of the most portable basketry techniques and is friendly on the hands. We’ll be using tapestry yarn for our stitching material offering a colourful palette to explore different stitching patterns and shaping options – all of which provide endless design possibilities. This basket ticks a lot of boxes and should come with a warning.…it can be addictive…in a good way.

The kit for this class will be mailed to you directly and the cost of shipping within Canada is included. There will be an additional cost for shipping outside Canada.

Random Woven Nest Basket

10:00am – 3:00pm

Random weave is one of Joan’s favourite styles of baskets. The structure is beautiful, reminding one of bird’s nests. It is strong, durable and lends itself to sculptural forms in both small and large scale. We will discuss several ways of approaching this technique. Discussion will cover how to harvest and forage for other plant materials suitable for this technique.

A materials kit will be provided consisting of dyed round reed for the construction of this basket which can either be picked up at HCP or mailed to you with an additional cost of $20 within Canada. If you live outside of Canada, shipping costs will vary. We will email you to arrange shipping if you select this option.

Knotless Netting Dressing a Stone and Making a Pouch Workshop

10:00am – 3:00pm

This ancient stitching technique has been used to make pouches and bags in many parts of the world. In this workshop, participants will start by learning design variations of knotless netting using waxed threads worked over a smooth stone – thus Dressing a Stone. The second project will be creating a Small Pouch with the option of making it into a necklace. Traditionally this style of basket was made with plant fibre cordage. Included in the material kit will be a small bundle of daylily leaves so we can cover the process of making Cordage. All the supplies for this course will be mailed to you as a kit, except for the stone – instructions on the size and best shape of stone will be provided.
