Garden of the Month: November 2021

The Garden of the Month for October 2021 is the Memorial Wreath Garden

This garden was planted in 2019 on the site of the previous Ornamental Grass Garden.

This location had both drainage and weed challenges. Common Horsetail (Equisetum arvense) rhizomes had spread throughout the entire site. This is one of the most widespread garden weeds in the world. We have tried to eradicate it by solarization.

Raised planter beds made from Western Red Cedar locally milled in Sooke have provide a sunny, well-drained area.

This garden is a production garden where plants are planted closer together to maximize space for pruning of plants to be used in creating holiday wreaths for our always popular wreath making workshops held here in late November-December.

It showcases a variety of shapes, colors and textures. Most are Conifers varying from weeping to prostrate forms having colors of golden, blue, variegated and various shades of green.

Conifers look good in all four seasons and come in a broad range of sizes, forms, colors and textures. They are considered the “Kings “ of all foliage plants.
