Harvest Strong Natural Fibre from Himalayan Blackberry
Learn how to harvest plant fibre from one of our most prolific “invasives” - Rubus armeniacus, AKA Himalayan Blackberry!
Artist Christi York will teach you what to look for, how to harvest, process, store and dry the fibre. You will be taught how to make thick cordage, and then shown to make a brush with a wrapped cordage technique. Each participant should leave with one small brush. Christi will have other projects made from blackberry fibre on-hand, for you to look at and hopefully spark even more inspiration. Come learn about this versatile, free, fibre source!
IMPORTANT: Participants are encouraged to wear long sleeved tops and long pants, and bring leather gloves, (other heavy duty gloves), and bring garden pruners if you have them.

Instructor Bio: Christi York
For York, the material is the muse. Hand harvesting her own plant materials for sculptural basketry, she spends many hours processing wild plants into a more refined state; invaluable time spent learning her materials by feel—a kind of moving meditation that informs the work ahead.
Never ending curiosity drives her fascination with plants—experimental, process driven, daily studio practice often unearths unexpected results. Working between three-and two-dimensional work, she is always asking “what if?” in an attempt to combine ancient techniques with a modern aesthetic.
With a background in both graphic and jewelry design, York's contemporary craft work naturally flows towards mixed media. Vintage textiles, wild crafted inks, botanical contact printing with real leaves or flowers, and hand stitching all make their way into her mixed media collages. More...
