Why volunteer at HCP? Exercise, sharing your skills, learning new skills under mentors, camaraderie, spending time in a beautiful setting, restoring the conservation area, and contributing to the well-being of our community.
“The Volunteers who work and have worked at HCP have been absolutely central to both its survival and growth. It is no exaggeration to state that without the passionate commitment of the volunteers over the past 30 years, the HCP would not exist today.” Roger Charles, Executive Director
Become part of a close-knit group of volunteers in charge of a particular demonstration garden, construction projects, a committee or front office. Or, work more independently on a particular project that suits your interests.

Library
The library at HCP has over 3200 books plus magazines and hanging files that contain information of interest to gardeners, landscapers and scientists. We would like a volunteer to join us in looking after this precious resource – someone who likes keeping things in order, has a special interest in plants, and would be able to work for 3 hours every second Saturday morning (but other days could be considered). The library is often not busy, so volunteers can work at their own pace and are encouraged to do lots of reading in order to be of assistance to our “customers.”
Elementary School Tours
Do you like to plant seeds and share the excitement of new growth with young children? Your time is needed to help guide students when school classes come for field trips.
During a 90 minute visit the students plant seeds, learn about soil and compost and get up close and personal with our wiggly red friends. After a garden visit the children leave with a better understanding of where the food on their dinner plate comes from.
Gardening (demonstration gardens or conservation group)
Volunteers meet Wednesday or Saturday mornings. Coffee, cookies and great company provided!
We are currently looking for more gardeners for our Saturday group. Experienced gardeners or those wishing to gain garden knowledge are welcome. Training provided.
“Every week I look forward to meeting friends and sharing a laugh. “ Leslie
Mechanic
We are in urgent need of a mechanic for small engine repair and experienced hardscape installers.
Construction
The construction team works on a number of functional and beautifying projects, some simple, some more complicated. Additional skilled carpenters are needed today!
Front Desk & Reception
Pick a regular half day or full day and come on a weekly basis to support the administration staff. Greet visitors as they arrive, process admissions, provide directions, maintain the gift shop, fold brochures, stuff envelopes, etc.
Casual Help
Be on call to help with events such as the plant sales, Arts & Music in the Garden, painting, etc.
Master Gardeners
Certified Master Gardeners are needed to help lead adult tours and work events.
Committees, Task Forces and Board
Skills and energies are always needed to help in areas such as fundraising, communications, site plan, building plans, governance, IT, human resources, finance and more. Contact Roger Charles, Executive Director, T: 250-479-6162 or director@hcp.ca
“Being able to play with both books and plants is my idea of heaven! “
