Bursaries and Financial
Resources
Through the generous support of individuals and community organizations the College is able to provide bursaries and other funding to students who are experiencing financial hardship. PHC will inform students of available funds throughout the program and assist them with the bursary application process. We provide bursaries in the first month of the program to assist students in purchasing the required supplies and gear. At the graduation ceremony following the program, various financial awards are also distributed.
Student Loans
If you will be applying for a student loan, we offer to assist with the application process and support you in creating a budget and loan repayment plan. During the Business Practices course, the instructor will discuss managing student loan repayment while establishing a business or entering the workforce.
Country Grocer Food Vouchers
Vouchers from our local Country Grocer are available periodically to help students on a limited budget.
Casual Job Opportunities
We receive many casual and part-time job opportunities for students during the program and these will be posted on a job board in the Student Room.
Graduate Employ List
At the end of the program, a list of contact information for graduating students is compiled and circulated by request to members of the public who contact the College looking to hire gardening help.
Withdraws
Ensuring retention of students through graduation is the best approach to ensuring that students have the earning capacity to repay their student loans. We monitor attendance and grades regularly in order to identify students at risk of failure or withdrawal. Appropriate tutors will be available to assist students who are struggling with the academic component of our program. College administrators are available every school day to counsel and assist students. Students that decide to withdraw from the program will be asked to meet with College administrators to discuss their reasons, and will be informed of the consequences if they are holding a student loan.
On Campus Resources
Library
There is a comprehensive library at HCP which both students and instructors have full access to. The library holds a wide range of books, scholarly articles, manuals and guidebooks pertaining to horticulture, gardening and the natural environment. A knowledgeable librarian is available to offer assistance and guidance.
The Gardens
The 103 acres of landscaped garden and conservation area with its many native habitats are a remarkable resource available to support your studies. All your courses have a practical component which more often than not will take you into the Gardens to identify, examine, build, maintain or design.
Mentors
While studying at the PHC you will work closely with numerous mentors in the Partnership groups and through field trips and guest lecturers. You will meet and network with many key players in the horticultural community of Victoria and lower Vancouver Island.
