Outerbridge Nature Sanctuary “Shangri-la”

Located in Broadmead, near the corner of Royal Oak Drive and Blenkinsop Road, the 3.8 ha. (9.39 acres) of park was granted to Saanich by Mrs. Joanne Outerbridge in 2006. Mrs. Outerbridge moved here from Bermuda and created the oasis of ponds, trees, viewscapes and vistas with her own initiative and resources. Known for its varied bird life, the gardens were often open to the public to enjoy.

This is the first time Horticulture Centre of the Pacific has undertaken a management project to rehabilitate a public park. The agreement is a 5 year management contract with the Municipality of Saanich to rehabilitate Shangri-la, the garden which Mrs.Outerbridge had developed over two decades.

"The District of Saanich has been incredibly supportive of the Horticulture Centre of the Pacific since its founding in 1979. Managing Outerbridge is not only an opportunity to give our students a hands on practical experience but also as a way to thank Saanich for its support over the years."  said Roger Charles, who added that more volunteers are needed to help continue the restoration. "The addition of volunteer support from garden clubs and individuals who like to garden and want to be a part of this community effort will be welcomed" says Charles.

The restoration effort is being led by retired Saanich Parks Manager and Glendale Gardens volunteer, Dave de Shane.  To join the volunteer effort, contact HCP, at 250-479-6161 or volunteer@hcp.ca.
