Eileen Nicholls – Crafted By Hand
Sitting under the leaf of her mother’s Singer treadle sewing machine was Eileen’s first encounter with textiles.
Eileen is a self-taught knitter and has sewn garments for herself, for her children and grandchildren. Over the years she has produced nearly one thousand mohair and fur Teddy Bears which have travelled around the world.
In 1988 Eileen joined a weaving guild and has tried spinning. Two LeClerc floor looms grace the dining area in her kitchen in View Royal.
Weaving rugs and decorative household articles has proven to be her abiding interest. She works with wonderful natural fibres of wool, cotton, linen and silk in a palette of colour. Charming little silk evening bags crafted from men’s neck ties satisfy an interest in up-cycling and repurposing perfectly lovely fibre.
